Optomistic Products’ Universal LightProbes™ offer a unique 2-part solution that addresses almost every LED test requirement you may have. First, determine the type of test and output you require and choose a pre-programmed Sensor that addresses those requirements.

Second, customise the test for your particular mechanical requirements and constraints, by combining the Sensor with any of the interchangeable Fiber-Optic Probes.

To learn how easy it is to work with the Optomistic light probes please take a minute to look at the short video that Optomistic has made, It shows how the different LED colours give each a clear and easy to measure output voltage. I also shows the wide range of available analogue and digital sensors and a large range of matching light probes to cover a large range of applications.

Colour Binning / multiple coulors

1. Penta;Sensors: The most popular Sensor for both ICT and Functional Test. Provides colour binning for the 5 main LED colour and white, plus intensity test.  Analog voltage output.

Penta Colour chart

The Universal LightProbe Penta Sensor features built-in colour binning – testing any of the five main LED colours, blue, green, yellow/amber, orange, red, and also white, by providing a unique voltage output for each colour. The colour output is independent of intensity, which saves valuable processing time.

Universal LightProbe Penta Sensors also test a wide range of LED intensity, from dim to bright LEDs, without adjustment, providing an analog voltage output corresponding the the LED’s luminous intensity in milicandelas.

1A. High-Sensitivety and Low-Sensitivity Penta solutions

For very dim LEDs, for Color binning and intensity test of very dim LEDs. High-Sensitivity Penta Sensors are available. For high intensity LEDs Low-Sensitivity Penta Sensors are available, both with analogue voltage output.

Penta High Sensitivity sensor
Penta High Sensitivity (Click to enlarge)

The Universal LightProbe Penta High-Sensitivity Sensor features the same popular built-in color binning as the regular Penta Sensor, and is designed test extremely dim LEDs, providing an analog output for intensity, ranging from 0 to 4 volts, corresponding to the LED’s luminous intensity in millicandelas.

Download here the Penta High Sensitivity Data Sheet for more information. Or use our contact form.

The mcd-related output is consistent with most LED manufacturer’s specifications, eliminating the need for any conversion. The Universal LightProbe Penta High Sensitivity Sensor will test finished-product LED displays (through-hole T-1 3/4 LEDs) in the range of 1 mcd to 15 mcd.

Ultra High Sensitivity Sensors: For the ON/OFF status test of extremely dim LEDs, down to 0.018mcds are available but only with a Digital output. Download here the Ultra High Sensitivity Data Sheet for more information. Or use our contact form.

In cases where the LED colour under test is a “boundary colour” and does not fit into the five prescribed visual colours on the Penta Sensor, we recommend the Spectra Sensor, see below.

Define your own colours to test.

2. Spectra Sensors: Assign you own colour boundaries/bin for any colour in the visual spectrum, plus intensity test. Analogue voltage output. Best for testing ‘Boundary Colour’ LEDs

Spectra chart

The Universal LightProbe Spectra Sensor tests for LED intensity, and for any colour in the visual spectrum, plus white. The Spectra Sensor is well-suited for the test of “boundary” colour LEDs, as it can unambiguously and repeatedly distinguish between not only adjacent visual colours such as green and yellow, but it can determine different hues of the same colour such as yellow and amber, regardless of LED intensity.

Universal LightProbe Spectra Sensors test any LED colour wavelength from 400 to 700 nm, and also white, providing an analogue voltage output  proportional to LED wavelength. There is no need to convert LED wavelength as a pulse rate – which improves the overall response time to test an LED.

The Universal LightProbe Spectra Sensors also test a wide range of LED intensity, from dim to bright LEDs, without adjustment, providing an analogue output ranging from 0 to 4 volts, corresponding to the LED’s intensity.

Light probe with USB connection
USB Connection on the Spectra.

Popular for Functional test, providing colour wavelength in nanometers, plus intensity test with a serial output via a USB connection to your PC are the Spectra USB Sensors.

The Universal LightProbe Spectra USB Sensor tests a wide range of LED intensities, and any colour in the visual spectrum, plus white, providing a linear response with a serial digital output via a PC.

It’s unique streaming technology provides LED colour wavelength (in tenths of nanometers) and an intensity output, which is displayed/printed out, rapidly and simultaneously, on a PC.  The Universal LightProbe Spectra USB Sensor utilises Tera Term communications software (included) and can also be obtained using LabView (utilising VISA technology). The Universal LightProbe Spectra USB Sensor reduces test time and provides continuous automatic data logging for statistical process control (SPC).

Single Colour LED Detection

3. Unicolor Sensors: Pre-programmed to test any one of the 5 main LED colours, plus white, providing an analogue voltage output relative to the LED’s intensity.

Uni colour sensor
One colour per sensor (Click to enlarge)

Universal LightProbe Unicolor Sensor is designed for the colour and intensity test of any single one of the five main LED colours (blue, green, yellow, orange, and red) plus white and Infrared (700nm to 1,000nm) and UV.

Universal LightProbe Unicolor Sensors check the LED colour by providing a voltage output proportional to LED intensity only if the LED is the colour specified for the Unicolor Sensor, e.g., blue, green, yellow/amber, orange, red or white, Infrared or UV. The Universal LightProbe Unicolor Sensor provides a single analogue output, ranging from 0 to 4 volts, which corresponds to the LED intensity, only if the correct colour is detected. The Sensor will be insensitive to the wrong colour.

Download here the Unicolor sensor Data Sheet for more information. Or use our contact form.

On / Off test very Dim LEDs

3A. Unicolor Digital Sensors: Pre-programmed to test any one of the 5 main LED colours, plus white. Digital output.

The Universal LightProbe Unicolor Digital Sensor is pre-programmed to respond only to a specific colour LED, including blue, green, yellow, orange, red, plus white. The Universal LightProbe Unicolor Digital Sensor is designed for the simple ON/OFF test and color check of a single color LED, with a digital output, quickly determining PASS/FAIL status without further processing by the ATE. The Universal LightProbe Unicolor Digital sensor provides the simplest and fastest interface to Automatic Test Equipment (ATE).

The Universal LightProbe Unicolor Digital Sensor tests the target LED’s colour by providing a Logic “1” voltage output (5 volts) only if the LED is the colour specified for the Unicolor Digital Sensor, e.g., blue, green, yellow, orange, red or white. The Sensor will be insensitive to the wrong colour, with a Logic “0” output (0 volts). The Sensor provides optimum ATE/ICT Pin Board/memory interface for fast digital burst mode LED test.

Blinking LEDs

4) Blinx Digital Sensors: Fast ON/OFF status of steady-state or blinking LEDs, up to 15Hz. Digital output.

Blinking Led Test

The Universal LightProbe Blinx Digital Sensor is designed for the simple ON/OFF test of any colour blinking or steady-state LED, for fast results with a digital output.

The Universal LightProbe Blinx Digital Sensors check the ON/OFF status of any color LED, whether stable or blinking/pulsed, up to a rate of 15 Hz, and provide a Logic “1” output (5 volts) only if the LED is “ON” and a Logic “0” if the LED is “OFF.”
